How to Calculate Your IFTA Taxes in 5 Steps

1

Gather Your Trip Data

Before starting, compile your trip sheets, ELD (Electronic Logging Device) mileage summaries, and fuel receipts for the specific quarter you are filing. You will need the total miles driven and total gallons purchased per jurisdiction.

2

Set Report Parameters

Select your home base jurisdiction (where your IFTA license is issued), the reporting year, the specific quarter, and the primary fuel type your fleet uses (e.g., Diesel, Gasoline, CNG). This ensures the calculator pulls the correct state-specific tax rates.

3

Enter Jurisdiction Metrics

Add a row for every state or province your vehicles drove through. Input the exact miles driven and gallons of fuel purchased in that specific jurisdiction. If you accidentally add the same state twice, don’t worry—you can easily remove rows.

4

Calculate & Review

Click “Calculate IFTA Tax.” The tool will instantly determine your fleet’s overall MPG and calculate the tax due or credit owed for each individual state based on your net taxable gallons and current surcharges.

5

Export & File

Review the comprehensive summary table. Once verified, click the “Download PDF” button to save an audit-ready copy for your records. Use these final numbers to file your official return with your base jurisdiction’s Department of Revenue.

Frequently Asked Questions

The International Fuel Tax Agreement (IFTA) is an arrangement between the lower 48 states of the U.S. and the Canadian provinces to simplify the reporting of fuel use by motor carriers operating in multiple jurisdictions. An IFTA report balances the tax you paid at the pump against the tax you actually owe for the miles driven in each specific state.
You must file an IFTA report if you operate a “qualified motor vehicle” across state or provincial lines. A vehicle qualifies if it has two axles and a gross vehicle weight exceeding 26,000 pounds, has three or more axles regardless of weight, or is used in a combination with a combined weight exceeding 26,000 pounds.
IFTA reports are due quarterly on the last day of the month following the end of the quarter. The standard deadlines are:
  • Q1 (Jan-Mar): Due April 30
  • Q2 (Apr-Jun): Due July 31
  • Q3 (Jul-Sep): Due October 31
  • Q4 (Oct-Dec): Due January 31
If the due date falls on a weekend or state holiday, the deadline is extended to the next business day.
Certain states (like Indiana, Kentucky, and Virginia) apply an additional surcharge on top of the base fuel tax rate. Our calculator automatically identifies if a jurisdiction requires a surcharge based on the quarter and fuel type selected, and seamlessly blends it into your total tax rate for that state to ensure your final amount due is 100% accurate.
Failing to file your IFTA report on time can result in a penalty of $50 or 10% of your total net tax liability, whichever is greater. Additionally, interest is charged on all late taxes due to each jurisdiction. Chronic late filing can eventually lead to the revocation of your IFTA license.
